Lately

Oskar was being too quiet so I went to check on him and found this.

His hair is so long when we comb it back it reminds me of  Christopher Walken or Billy Crystal.

The beach!  I LOVE swimming in the ocean and I wish we would go more often.  Oskar actually played with sand toys this time instead of running around chasing the birds the whole time, though he did dedicate a certain amount of time to that.  He played with his friends and kept wanting to go swimming in the waves.

My little precious

I made this!!!  It's a cheesecake and I made it and it was delicious.  I don't actually like cheesecake that much but Joel does and he said it was just like store bought.

18 months

Since Oskar wasn't exactly eating food when he turned one we didn't get a chance to give him a dessert and let him go at it.  So when he turned 18 months last week we got him some strawberry shortcake.  This is his story.

No pictures please.

Gimme!

It got on his hand and he didn't like it so I tried to feed it to him.

He really didn't like it on his hand so he tried to wipe it on mine.

He thought maybe a fork would help him keep it off his hands.

He finally started digging in...after I accidentally spilled on all down his front.

He took a few bites and smeared the rest on his tray.

All done.  Didn't like it.

Yes, I'll take a bath.  Thank you.

The Times They Are a-Changin'

I've been brought to tears that last two times I've put Oskar to bed because I've felt that my baby is not going to be a baby for very much longer.  Even though he may be too old for this (or maybe not, I don't really know) I still give him a bottle and rock him to sleep at nap time and nighttime.  I get to hold him and cuddle him, sing him to sleep and just feel his weight in my arms and I've just felt like I should appreciate these times with him because they're not going to last much longer.  Even though his eating has been terribly frustrating and painful for both of us, I think it has kept him a baby longer.  He still takes a bottle twice a day and I still have to feed him a lot of his food, but he's getting better and things are changing.  While I'm so thankful and happy that he is getting better, when he is ready to do everything on his own I think it will make me a little sad ... mostly happy but a little bit sad.

This boy has eaten entire eggs multiple times this past week ... that he fed to HIMSELF (mostly)!  He also ate 1 1/2 pieces of bread and butter before his nap this morning.  This may not seem like a big deal BUT IT IS!  It's huge.  It has never happened before.  And the biggest part is after he ate one piece HE ASKED FOR MORE!  Huge, I tell you.

Our three week vacation to Utah will be interesting, I'm hoping he will still eat even with all the fun cousins and new furniture to climb on.

Aaaand a family picture.  Joel's brother took it for us and we'll get professional ones done in August (Joel won a photo session at an auction).

La Brea Tar Pits

A week or two ago a friend (we were in the same ward at BYU) and her son accompanied Oskar and I to the La Brea Tar Pits.

Tons of fossils have been excavated from the tar pits that show the kinds of animals that were living in Los Angeles up to 11,000 years ago.  The picture below is of a mammoth!  I love mammoths and have decided that it is now my spirit guide instead of an orangutan.

We watched a movie that showed the death trap that is a tar pit.  One animal is sucked into the tar and gets trapped and then another animal thinking it will prey on the first one tries to attack it but in the process also gets sucked into the tar and is trapped and then another animal sees the two in the tar and thinks it will have a nice treat but also gets sucked into the tar and then they all die.  The picture below describes the process of getting stuck and dying in the tar.  What you can't see in the picture is the baby mammoth on land watching her mother get pulled down by the sticky tar.  It's pretty brutal.

Oskar was not scared in the slightest of these animatronics even though taxidermy is my number one fear.
At this station you pull the thing out of the tar just to see how difficult and sticky it was.  And there was a sign that said to not climb on the glass.  Oops.

One of the workers was walking around with a saber-tooth tiger head.  Oskar gave it a kiss.

A sabter-tooth tiger attacking a ground sloth.  Again, Oskar was not phased in the slightest.  What a guy.

This was the point in our adventure when I was trying to pick up Oskar to take him outside and he ran around and hid from me.

And this was the end.  We can only go out outings for so long before we all have had enough.
